About the Author
Janice (Ginny) Redish has been helping clients and colleagues communicate clearly for more than 20 years. For the past ten years, her focus has been helping people create usable and useful web sites.

A linguist by training, Ginny is passionate about understanding how people think, how people read, how people use web sites - and helping clients write web content that meets web users' needs in the ways in which they work.

Ginny loves to teach and mentor - and to practice what she preaches. She turns research into practical guidelines that her clients and students can apply immediately to their web sites.

Ginny's earlier books received rave reviews for being easy to read and easy to use, as well as comprehensive and full of great advice. She is co-author of two classic books on usability:

Interesting read

Book had some good tidbits but no earth shattering moments for me. A lot of the info I've read in other books. Definitely a bigger focus on the writing of web content for sure.

FORGET ABOUT IT!!

Are you waking up at night worrying about strategy and tactics? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Janice (Ginny) Redish has done an outstanding job of writing a second edition of a book on how to help you have great conversations through your web site, mobile app, social media, and whatever future innovations encourage interactions between you and others.

Author Redish, begins by showing you how to have good conversations through your web site. In addition, the author delves into why planning your content is critical for apps, web sites, individual web topics, blogs, social media messages, and everything you write. She then discusses how to integrate content and design from the beginning. The author then, shows you how to consider the entire site. She continues by looking at the size of your site; if it is large enough, then you may need pathway pages between the home page and the information people want. In addition, the author tackles four important guidelines: Think information, not document; divide your content thoughtfully; consider how much to put on one web page; and, use PDFs sparingly and only for good reasons.
She then continues to focus on not hogging the conversation within a single web topic. Next, the author reminds you how to combine labels with more information. Then, she shows you how to choose a good heading style: questions, statement, verb phrases, etc. The author continues by looking at how to write the paragraphs, sentences, and words of your web content. In addition, she encourages you to use numbered lists for instructions as much as possible. Next, the author warns that you should not make program or product names links by themselves. She then describes what makes illustrations work well, or not work well. The author continues by showing you how to negotiate successful reviews and edits. Finally, she shows you how to do usability testing of the content.

This most excellent book will help you create great content. Perhaps more importantly, this book shows you how to meet your business goals by satisfying your site visitors' conversations through usability testing.

If you're using this book for a college class (as I was), be sure to buy the paperwork version. Content (persona scenarios, for example) are missing from the ebook version. I tried the ebook from both Google and Amazon, and the content was visible in Google's online ebook viewer, but it was not visible in the downloadable version, and the same was true for Amazon.

Jeanette Landenwitch has been working with her hands all her life. This led her first to an education in interior design, then into a career as a seamstress and clothing designer. Great stone setting book

If you have been working with silver clay and want to learn how to set stones in your pieces, this is the book for you!! Jeanette Landenwitch has done an excellent job of describing the many ways to set stones, including a list of the stones that can safely be fired in place in the clay, and those that must be set after the silver has been fired. A chapter on tools and materials discusses the tools needed for this work and how they are used, including the various ways to solder. This is followed by a chapter to help you decide the best setting for your particular type of stone, including how to calculate and allow for clay shrinkage. The chapter on bezels includes discussions on how to make bezels from clay, PMC sheet, syringe clay, bezel strip, and how to use purchased bezel cups. I had no idea there were so many different ways to make bezels. This is all followed by a chapter on the design and use of prongs, again made many different ways. The final chapter covers the use of posts, straps, pave, trapped settings, stone inlay, channel work, chip inlay, channel setting and combinations of various settings.

Rather than photographs to illustrate the thorough directions, drawings by Tim McCreight illustrate the various steps. And scattered throughout the book are photographs of beautiful work done by many well-known clay artists. Six artists then describe how they made a piece with set stones. And Tim McCreight uses photos to illustrate how to make a brooch with a malachite cabochon and two moonstones.

A great book for your PMC library

I teach Jewelry and metalworking at a college and have introduced PMC as part of the casting segment. Although this method has not been sanctioned by the state as part of the curriculum, I still include it. I have been reading numerous books on this process and this book by far has the best explanation on setting stones, it goes in great detail and offers good advice. For any individual that is serious in PMC this is an important reference book to have.

A very Useful and Interesting Book

Over 40 methods, techniques and variations for creating settings, each with clear instructions, drawings and examples make this a very special book.
The author states that 'the goal of this book is to expand your repertoire of stone setting options, specifically for use with PMC.' I set out with this in mind as I wanted to find an answer to the question: Does the book come up to this goal?
I found that it does just that.

The book also helped to update my knowledge of the English language: in the list of gem stones I came across the word 'iffi' which I had never yet come across. I found that it means: it might- or might not work. A very useful word,so I suggest that you add it to your vocabulary.

The chapter GEM STONES is a no-nonsense text. It covers the most important things a metal clay worker should know. It includes a list of tests run by the author.
The more I read, the more enthusiastic I became. There was much to try out and much to choose from. This kept me busy for a considerable time.
The final chapter: 'The work behind the work' gives an interesting view on the way in which several artists work. This chapter culminates in Tim McCreight's 'Steps in making a brooch with stones'.

Worth it!

This is an excellent book. Physically, it's bound to last and of museum quality. It's also easy to use for copying and for appreciating. I've got the drawing intro and the same can be said of that. Pricey but worth the money for the serious student of classical art who can later keep it as a great reference book and coffee table display.

Elements of Power Elements is a classic text, with modern examples that upgrade its relevance. It is an excellent first book on the subject, but also a reference that I use time and time again. Its greatest strength is that it does not compromise on any of the important technical breadth and depth aspects. The revision is timely and enhances some important materials including applications and examples. Philip T. Krein holds the Grainger Endowed Chair in Electric Machinery and Electromechanics as Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I'm happy to say that I wasn't the least bit confused

I think I should start this review with a little confession: I don't read out of chronological order. However, that doesn't mean that I do end up doing that. Which is what happened with this book. The Curse Servant is actually the second book in a series featuring Dorian Lake, a hermetic charm and hex expert.

Phew! Now that it's out of my system, I'm happy to say that I wasn't the least bit confused! That's right, you are safe to read starting with this book if you want. You aren't going to be confused. J.P. Sloan did a great job seamlessly placing magic in a rather normal world without having to put too much exposition or confusing new reader. I was not only able to follow what was going on, gather what happened in the previous book, but I was also able to feel a connection with his characters. A serious feat.

There were two thoughts that came to mind the moment I started reading, The Curse Servant: 1. Serious creep factor! 2. Reminds me of Constantine.

Now, I don't mean comic Constantine or Keanu Reeves Constantine. I mean the TV Show. Sadly, I'm not well versed in the comic series, but I fell in love with the British demonologist when the show was airing. That said, J.P. Sloan's Dorian Lake reminded me of Constantine. He had a smartass snarky way of telling people off and a way to go against the rules while still being able to keep certain morals. Yes, his morality was put to a series of tests. Yes, he never really got a break. The only thing I'd say that wasn't Constantine, was the fact that Dorian Lake doesn't seem jaded. Not yet, anyways.

With this little connection, I fell in love with Dorian. I felt for him. I wanted him to be happy. I wanted the people he called family to be happy. I didn't want any of the bad things that were happening to ruin what world he was trying to cultivate. As a reader, I relished in the bad things.

J.P. Sloan made an epic that I'm am not only going to keep reading, but also get hard copies of. That's right, this man will be placed in my bookshelf next to the faves. And, that's saying something.

He weaves a twisty web of politics and magic. We have the internal politics of the magic world and the politics of our natural world. Each one has an agenda with the other and Dorian Lake is put in the middle of it all. As if this wasn't enough on his plate, Dorian is dealing with trying to find his soul which is missing in a limbo like world called Nether (not new news, he lost it in The Curse Merchant). On top of all of that, he is dealing with something out of his control that has taken over a little girl he considers a sister. Yep, his life sucks.

Nothing gets me more excited than a snarky man trying to do the right thing and being pitted into political intrigue with demonic like forces. If this isn't a winner, I don't know what is.

Great sequel!

I loved the second part in this exiting new series. The events that happened in The Curse Merchant still haunt Dorian in this new volume and there are some nasty surprises for him. Without giving the plot away, he seems to bite of more than he can chew when trying to help a little girl who's possessed.
There's lots of action, but at the same time we learn a bit more about the magic system and the different players who are active in this world. You can see the author setting up potential conflicts for later on in the series, which promises for some epic confrontations. At the same time, we learn a bit more of Dorian's past and how he became who he is now.

If you're looking to pick up a new Urban Fantasy series, give this one a try. Read The Curse Merchant first and then proceed quickly to this one. Well worth it.

Dorian Lake is a fascinating guy with some fun quirks. He curses and hexes

So after reading the first book, The Curse Merchant, I wanted to see where this was going to continue. Dorian Lake is a fascinating guy with some fun quirks. He curses and hexes, makes charms, and he sure has some lady drama LOL He also has his own personal drama with his soul not being with him. So when an offer turns up to help him find his soul before some big bad does, he is hesitant but knows he needs to do this.

Dorian is such an interesting character. He always seems mean and sassy, but he's actually quite soft hearted and I think he'd be hilarious in real life, though he'd probably get beat up! He's struggling with his friend who's the mayor's campaign guy, because ladies keep getting possessed and threatening him. Then he meets a guy who tells him he knows of a girl who can help him get his soul back. And then his best friend's daughter's life gets put on the line for his soul, things heat up. His friends, Julian, Ben, Edgar, they know about his soul, they just don't know exactly how bad this is because Dorian tries to hide it. He'll do almost anything to keep his friends and family safe. And we meet Elle, the little girl, and oh boy is that gunna tear you up. And Dorian is always willing to sacrifice for others.

The writing is well done. It's mysterious, full of magic, and suspense, and has some great action. And though you probably should read book one, you could read book two without trouble of knowing things from book one. The author adds just the right amount of back story to keep you in the loop without info dumps. It's an emotional book, and you'll want to follow Dorian along with his friends for more. The characters are so real and believable and I know I am going to want more. I can't wait to read the next book! 5 MAGICAL PAWS!

About the Author
Dr. Christina May is very familiar with pay-what-you-can community cafes. She served as the founding vice president of the F.A.R.M. Cafe board of directors and currently serves on the national OWEE board and the Unity Tables advisory board. Chris holds a PhD in nonprofit management and leadership, and her doctoral dissertation, titled The Pay-What-You-Can Nonprofit Restaurant Model: A Case Study, was the first known scholarly publication to describe the experience of operating a community cafe. Chris is a retired Naval Officer, with over 25 years of public service. She has completed a master of public administration degree, a graduate certificate in executive leadership, 30 additional graduate credits in management, and holds certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources and is a certified manager. Additionally, she serves as the board vice chair of the homeless/transitional facility in her area. She is employed as an adjunct professor at Appalachian State University, teaching nonprofit management courses.
