Pygmalion's Chisel: For Women Who are Never Good Enough, by Tracy M. Hallstead, examines the enduring critical presence in contemporary Western culture that scrutinizes, critiques, and sizes women down in their daily lives, despite rights gained through the centuries. Pygmalion was the ancient mythical sculptor who believed that all women were essentially flawed and who therefore endeavored to chisel a statue of a woman whom he called Galatea to perfection. Like the perpetually carved and refined Galatea, women labor under Western culture's a priori assumption that they are flawed, yet they are often unable to account for the self-criticism and self-doubt that result from this premise. As Hallstead analyzes the culture's requirements for the perfect woman, she traces how cultural forces permeate women's personal lives. In calling for solutions, she resurfaces the thinking of compelling historical women who responded, rather than reacted, to the patriarchal culture that devalued them. In engaging these women of the past, whose struggles were eerily similar to those of contemporary women, Hallstead encourages a responsive feminism that becomes the clear path leading outside Pygmalion's chamber door.

Review
What I like best about this book is its balance between clear-eyed understanding of the backlash against the gains of women and a realistic awareness of the possibilities of resistance. Calling for a responsive feminism that finds pockets of instability within the system to push for transformation, Hallstead weaves practical suggestions into her analysis and provides institutional resources for change. Beautifully organized and accessibly written in a first-person voice, this book is bound to change the consciousness of readers. --Joan D. Hedrick, Charles A. Dana Professor of History, Trinity College; author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Life

Author Tracy Hallstead's book is a call-to-action of sorts, reminding us that while we who live in the post-feminist era have benefited greatly from the successes of the past, there still exists a plethora of work to be done in the area of gender discrimination in all of it's ugly forms. Reviewing the progress of mid-nineteenth century to early twentieth century pioneers in the women's rights and anti-slavery movements, Ms. Hallstead goes beyond to explore and address our modern-day realities, challenges and crises that "scrutinize, critique and size women down in their daily lives" to achieve a patriarchal-based and powered fantasy of women (silent, immobile & slender) that does not and can not exist in reality. Using the powerful myth of Pygmalion and Galetea (moral: women are inherently flawed and must be carved and shaped into men's fantasy to be controlled and dominated), and sharing her own personal experiences, the author explores the disturbing and destructive impact of misogynystic trends in our patriarchal, popular culture today on women. This includes all aspects of their emotional, spiritual, physical, psychological and professional wellbeing. Finally, the author implores her readers to adopt a "new consciousness of how our culture carves us down"; that is, while we may enjoy (and be grateful for) the gains of our foremothers, we must be empowered to continue questioning, challenging, dismantling and many times even rejecting mainstream culture's messages, expectations, treatment and laws that are limiting and destructive to women. The benefit, of course, will be that both men and women in our society will be freed from the oppression that these long-standing, unrealistic, limited and harmful forces impose on both genders. Pymalion's Chisel: For Women Who are "Never Good Enough" is a scholarly, enlightening and inspiring read for all.
