Introducción a las computadoras personales

La compañía IBM introdujo al mercado la primera computadora personal el 12 de agosto de 1981. Pero debido a su alto costo, al principio comprar una computadora personal era sólo un sueño para la mayoría de los hogares en los Estados Unidos.

Una computadora personal es un conjunto de piezas electrónicas, o hardware, que, combinadas con programas, o software, hacen de ésta una de las herramientas de conocimiento más útiles creadas por el hombre. Estas piezas son ensambladas, en el caso de las computadoras personales IBM PC compatibles, por centenares de compañías alrededor del mundo.

Hoy en día es posible comprar una computadora personal del tipo IBM PC compatible por menos de 1.000 dólares, con la ventaja adicional de ser mucho más rápida que una computadora que pudo haber comprado por más del doble el año anterior.

La computadora en la siguiente gráfica es una Dell Dimension 8400 Series, equipada con un procesador Intel Pentium 4.

A pesar de que esta computadora usa uno de los procesadores más avanzados hoy en día, su precio es menos de 2.000 dólares.


Las diferencias entre una computadora del tipo IBM compatible y una del tipo Macintosh

Los dos tipos de computadoras personales más usados son las IBM compatible y las del tipo Macintosh. En este libro hablaremos de las computadoras de tipo IBM compatible por el hecho de que éstas representan casi el 90 por ciento del mercado de computadoras personales.

También es importante subrayar que aunque las Macintosh son sólo fabricadas por la compañía Apple, las IBM compatible son fabricadas por un sinnúmero de compañías diferentes alrededor del mundo.

Las computadoras IBM compatibles y las Macintosh son muy fáciles de diferenciar. Las diferencias principales son:

La mayoría de las IBM compatibles usan procesadores fabricados por compañías como Intel y AMD.

Las computadoras del tipo IBM compatible usan sistemas operativos como Windows y Linux.

Las computadoras del tipo Macintosh

Este tipo de computadora ha sido fabricado por la compañía Apple desde 1985. Hoy en día su producción constituye casi el 10 por ciento del mercado de las computadoras personales. Sobre todo, su enfoque empresarial se centra en surtir sistemas escolares de computadoras buenas.

Esta compañía siempre ha tratado de estar en la vanguardia de todas las nuevas tecnologías y esto les ha permitido sobrevivir en este ambiente de mucha competencia.

Las Macintosh usan un ratón con un solo botón y un procesador fabricado por la compañía Motorola llamado PowerPC. También requieren el sistema operativo System 9.0.

En la gráfica anterior se puede ver un PowerBook G4 de solamente 1 pulgada de grosor y con una pantalla de 15,2 pulgadas. Es portátil, sólo pesa 5,3 libras y está construido casi totalmente de titanio.


¿Qué tipo de computadora personal le conviene comprar?

Esta es una de las preguntas que más me hacían cuando trabajaba como vendedor de computadoras. Esta sección será muy útil para las personas que necesitan un poco de ayuda con esta decisión. Primero que nada, tiene que pensar para qué necesita la computadora. Segundo, debe calcular cuánto puede invertir.

Hoy en día es casi seguro afirmar que cualquier computadora que compre tendrá suficiente memoria y la cantidad adecuada de dispositivos necesarios para que la mayoría de la gente pueda sacarles provecho, y que además, esten satisfechos con la compra.

Los siguientes son los elementos que se deben tomar en cuenta, en orden de importancia, si la computadora que piensa comprar es al menos una Pentium 4:

1.Cantidad de memoria RAM

2.Espacio en el disco duro

3.Tamaño del monitor

4.Unidad de crear los CD ("CD Writer") o los DVD (“DVD writer”)

Por ejemplo, si puede escoger entre más RAM, debe considerar comprar una computadora con al menos 128 MB de RAM. Esto es preferible a tener un disco con una capacidad mayor de 20 GB. A menos que su trabajo sea el de editar películas digitales, en este caso puede necesitar más de 128 MB de RAM y un disco de más capacidad.

También considere que actualmente se están usando mucho unidades para crear los CD y éstas son sumamente útiles para hacer copias.

Hoy en día debe considerar comprar una computadora con al menos 512MB de RAM y un disco duro con al menos 60 GB de capacidad, ya que los archivos creados por ciertos equipos, como cámaras digitales y escáneres (dependiendo del uso que usted les dé) pueden ocupar mucho espacio en un disco duro.

También tenga en cuenta que hoy en día se están usando muchas unidades para crear los DVD (es decir, quemadores de DVD+/-RW de doble lado), que son sumamente útiles para hacer copias de seguridad de películas de DVD. Por este motivo conviene conseguir una computadora que incluya una unidad de este tipo.

Mientras escribía este libro, encontré en el Internet dos paquetes de computadoras (del tipo IBM compatible) de dos marcas muy conocidas, Dell y HP. En la siguiente gráfica puede ver estas dos ofertas. La de la izquierda es una computadora Dell Dimension 4700 y la de la derecha es una HP Pavillion a1050y, pero con casi las mismas especificaciones.

Si compara estas computadoras componente por componente, verá que son muy similares. Tampoco difieren mucho en cuanto al precio. Aunque el paquete de la derecha (HP Pavilion a1050y) cuesta casi 100 dólares más, le ofrece un poco más equipo. Pero si le gusta más una Dell y paga un poco más por ésta, podrá conseguir una configuración muy similar por un precio parecido.

Estas son las diferencias más importantes de estos dos paquetes que cuestan casi lo mismo:

La HP tiene un disco duro de mayor capacidad, que es muy útil si toma muchas fotos con una cámara digital.

En este paquete la Dell incluye un monitor, y en el paquete de la HP éste es un cargo extra.

En el paquete de la HP le ofrecen una actualización gratis a una unidad de quemar DVDs, y tal vez por este motivo este paquete cuesta más que el de la Dell.

También es importante considerar las recomendaciones de amigos o familiares. Si ellos le recomiendan que compre una Dell —por haber tenido una buena experiencia con esta excelente compañía— entonces éste puede que sea el mejor camino a tomar.

Además, si le alcanza el presupuesto y tiene un negocio pequeño, es muy recomendable que consiga una unidad de crear los DVD, ya que éstos son muy útiles para hacer copias de seguridad tanto de sus películas como de su disco duro.

Great starter guide for the spanish speaking family member

My mom finally decided to take the plunge and invested in a brand new laptop. Seeing as she speaks Spanish as her 1st language, that made me her default tech support guy. This books the very basics. Thankfully it goes a little deeper and now my mom can us this as general reference/jumping off point to do stuff online suck as organize her email; use Amazon, Ebay and Facebook; and even simple troubleshooting tips. I wold highly recommend this as the best option out there that I could find for Spanish speakers. Hopefully, the ...for Dummies series comes out with more Spanish editions, but for now this is great

Third Edition good

I have used the third edition as a classroom reference book and teaching aid. The sample Kindle text available here is from the second edition, which of course is only able to have the older info. The third edition covers up to Windows Vista and pertinent info for earlier versions.

Overall it is a good book covering nearly anything one needs to know to accomplish basics and beyond in Windows and the basics of understanding hardware and software, and how it all works.

Great start to a new series!

This was a great book and great start to a new series.mI really enjoyed the racing team aspect. The characters were engaging and I can't wait to read about the rest of the team finding their mates too. Ms. Jameson is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors!

Wow! I love it! Racing the Alpha is the first release in a brand spanking new series, Dirt Track Dogs by P. Jameson and it totally rocks! Reading a shifter story about dirt track racing is a first for me. Being from the deep south where we love our racing, I was immediately intrigued and actually, I live only two miles from our local speedway so you know I'm already a fan! And Jameson does not disappoint! The story is exciting, thrilling, fast paced, original, compelling, humorous, sweet, romantic and sexy. The dialogue is smart, well written and flows beautifully. And the characters, well, let's just say they are the heart and soul of this story. They are captivating, fascinating, engaging and endearing. They grab your imagination, capture your heart and hold you prisoner from beginning to end. Sexy wolf-shifter Drake Folsom is president of Cedar Valley's best dirt track racing club, the Dirt Track Dogs, and is alpha of his all male rag-tag pack. Yep, they may be rag-tag but they can race and what they do best is win and that's because they concentrate only on racing - no women - ever! Their complete committment has been instrumental in helping to heal them all from their tortured past so, if it ain't broke - don't fix fix it. No women! But Drake had never counted on the fiery, curvaceous, dark haired angel showing up at their club demanding to become a member of the Dirt Track Dogs. What the heck? Drake's immediate reaction to this human female was surprising even to him but his fate was sealed the moment he shook her hand. The impact of touching her skin was nothing short of electrical - she is his mate! She is human, right? Oh my! Beautiful Ella Freeman has really talked herself into a real jam this time. She has wagered her car in a three lap race against unbeatable Drake Folsom. What was she thinking? Her car is the only thing on this earth that she possesses and the only thing left from her deceased Dad. But if she can win, the Dirt Track Dogs will allow her to become a member of their club and they are the best. But can she win the race and Drake's heart? No spoilers her but I will say this......Beautiful, sassy female dirt track racer that may or may not be human-check! Handsome, sexy, virgin alpha wolf-check! Ooops! I may have just let a little spoiler slip out! Danger, drama, heartbreak, a very surprising plot twist and exciting dirt track racing-check! Heated attraction, fiery passion, sweet romance and some good lovin'-you bet! That and a whole lot more! I can hardly wait to read about Beast, Blister, Diz and Surge! And maybe we'll hear more about Punk and Annie too! This is a stand alone story with NO cliffhanger, so enjoy! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Really, really enjoyed this first of a new series.

The h/ H along with the secondary characters were just fantastic. Now that I've read Drake and Ella's story of discovery, falling in love and their mating (along with dirt car racing) I look forward to the next one. Look out for Beast. I sure hope Blister's story will also be told.

An ancient land of frankincense and dates

When I started reading this book, I knew nothing about The Sultanate of Oman except what I'd learned during my stamp-collecting years, and back then this country was known as Muscat and Oman. Before oil was discovered, Muscat and Oman was identified (if at all) as an exporter of frankincense and dates. It was mainly desert plus the big port city of Muscat, and alternately ruled by a sultan or an imam. The British Empire generally supported the sultan and helped out during border disputes with the Saudis and Yemenis. Inter-tribal conflict was the preferred method of entertainment.

Once the author works his way through the dynastic conflicts and endless tribal wars, a strong ruler emerges in 1970, after removing his father from the throne, and he is in time to divert some of Oman's oil revenue into projects for modernizing his state. Sultan Qaboos, who is also the current imam, is still the absolute ruler of Oman. The author is fulsome in his praise of Sultan Qaboos, who ended Oman's isolation from the rest of the world.

This book ends with a gallery of photographs of the various people of Oman, very much in the style of 'National Geographic' magazine. Most of the pictures were taken in the early decades of the 20th Century.

I found this book quite interesting once I'd made it through the long centuries of dynastic turmoil.

Calvin H. Allen, Jr. has also written "Oman: The Modernization of the Sultanate (Nations of the Contemporary Middle East)" and "Oman Under Qaboos: From Coup to Constitution, 1970-1996."

Pleasant surprise.

Spook isn't a classic hero. She's not out to save the world. In fact she doesn't like the world very much. What she wants is to go to the lunar colony that the metahumans have and the job she takes guarantees the money to get there. All she has to do is find a missing boy. Except it's not so simple as that. It turns into something much more sinister.

Spook did have a classic sidekick in the hero named Carpenter. Carpenter has an affinity with wood as his superhero name would suggest. He can communicate with trees and manipulate wood to do what he wants. He's also a prefect foil to Spook's cynical outlook. He's an idealist who believes that the world will always need superheros. Carpenter also believes it's their duty to protect the normals from villains and criminals alike no matter how society views him.

Quantra is a complex supervillain. He is multi-layered and has many facets to his character. His motives were manifold and varies, too many to really penetrate and delve into in one review. It gave the story a lot of dimension and depth. I became very invested in finding out what made him tick and what his true objective was.

The world the story takes place in is a contradiction in itself. It has rocket ships yet it doesn't have advanced computers. It has dirigibles and helicopters yet doesn't have things like cell phones. I found it intriguing and different. It gave it a Sam Spade feel with a technological or "steampunk" edge.

Don' t Be a Hero was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting it to be as great as it was. I thought it would be passingly entertaining. Instead it captured me and held me in its grips. I wasn't completely sold on the concept of superheroes in a novel versus an action movie but I am now. I consider this book a win.

Surprisingly good - Don't be put off by the cheesy cover

All in all, a very pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting much when I bought it but, to my amazement, it was an excellent read. It's probably more of a four-and-a-half than a five but, hell, I got my money's worth which is (in my view) pretty unusual with a lot of 'hero' fiction.

No super-human story can truly be 'realistic' because the concept is intrinsically daft but this one came as close to plausibility as the genre allows. I certainly don't feel my time (or money) was wasted. I would even enjoy a sequel if the author feels the urge. I'd love to find out what happens to 'Sam' although, frankly, 'Spook' didn't interest me much; I don't understand how she survived the first chapter, let alone the entire book. Let's face it, turning into a shadow for up to three minutes isn't going to get anyone into the Justice League. She might make it into the Teen-Titans (if she was a bit younger) because they even let Robin in.

Note to author though: I've never heard a Yorkshireman refer to his father as 'Pa'. "Me Dad" would be more colloquial unless they've spent a lot of time on the Kent farm. Also, for the record, 'Quanta' could recharge himself by rubbing a bit of plastic on his hair or peeling of a strip of Sellotape. Both give of photons. (In a vacuum, peeling a strip of Sellotape actually gives off hard X-rays which is pretty freaky)

Definitely did not expect to like it that much

I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review, and this is one I really enjoy writing.

I really liked this book. I should say that I never read any classic superhero comic books so I cannot say if something in this book has been done before or not.

Personally, I really found it to be a quick and entertaining read. Spook is a lesbian superhero. Just that alone is cool. Why? Because even today only few authors dare to make their main character homosexual without centering the entire story around their sexual orientation. Chris Strange had the courage to move away from the classic gender role without making it a big deal in the story. We get to experience Spook's relationship with Gabby just like we would with any other relationship. Personally, I found that very refreshing and awesome.

While the writing itself isn't the most exceptional, I found it good enough to enjoy this book. The pace was just right, the characters were well developed and all in all I must admit that I was really surprised by how much I liked the book.

Will definitely be looking out other works by this author.

Juicy Read

I thought this book was a fast, juicy read and couldn't put it down. I have read many auto/biographies and found this one entertaining. Sure I think Holly convinced herself that she was in love with Hef and then after the break-up said to herself, "What was I thinking?". People are quick to make judgement but I know I have been in relationships when I was younger and thinking back I can't believe I thought I was in love, so for me she gets a pass.

I have seen reports on E News that she was lying about the bedroom situation with Hef, but if you read Izabella St. James' book "Bunny Tales" she seems to coincide with Holly's story, there's not much going on in THAT bedroom. By the way I think Daphne is the code name for Izabella in the book.

It does not sound like Hefner was a very nice guy, but why would you expect him to be, he's an 80 year old man dating a strand of 20 somethings at the same time. He cannot possibly be so disillusioned to believe that these kids are really in love with him. He knows he's being used so why would he respect them?

Even though I think a lot of Holly's decisions are ridiculous and she made a lot of her own problems - like why stay in the Playboy mansion if people were being so awful to her and she felt like crying all the time, I still like her. She is ambitious and driven and has worked hard. I'm glad she is happy and hope she makes better decisions while raising her daughter.

I know a lot of people are going to rip apart Holly and her book about her life story, but if you bought the book you bought it out if morbid curiosity. You didn't buy it to hear a heartwarming love story gone awry. You know she's going to reveal crazy personal details and tell about the cat fights and unusual experiences at the mansion. So if you like down and dirty tell-alls and "truth is stranger than fiction" details this is your book. Overall I think all the Playboy people deserve each other, they are all cut from the same cloth.

Really gives an insight into the world of the mansion and how ridiculous people are to idolize an old pervert. I like that Holly overcame all that crap and moved on.

I wanted to know what her relationship with Hef was really like. They slept together every night

I finished Holly Madison's book with more questions than when I started. As others have said, it is surprisingly well written, in terms of styling and format. But I guess I had some questions that I hoped would be answered, and they weren't. Girls Next Door was the one guilty-pleasure show I watched regularly. And, I grew up with Playboy in my home--and of course many of us wondered what really went on at the Mansion. So, when this book promised to be a "tell all" I thought it would actually tell ALL--but other than one very veiled description of one night of sex after an outing, it really never was mentioned again. I realize that Holly is now a married woman and mother, and maybe those days are so far in her rear view mirror she didn't want to go back there. Personally, I could have done with much less description of the various "mean girls" and continual cat fighting. I wanted to know what her relationship with Hef was really like. They slept together every night... did crossword puzzles and ate in bed. Did they cuddle? Did they ever make love (ever)? Did they talk, discuss the day, share their lives? If he told Holly she was the "love of my life", how did he explain his need for other women? What went on between then, for seven years, with all that time together? I just didn't feel the book covered that.

Here's the thing: I grew up in the '60's, and Playboy tried to reflect those times of "burn the bra" liberation. It was WOMEN who were liberated, to have sexual partners, to have careers, to do and be whatever they wanted. Hef sort of positioned himself as the champion of all that. So, what happened? And what happened to this generation of young women that they would find it interesting to be "arm-candy" to an old man, and allow themselves to be curfewed and kept under lock and key? I really want to understand this better.

How did Hef justify all the women, while holding the women there hostage with curfews and jealousy? How DID he manage to be with other women, if he was alone every night with Holly? Sneak off to another room? Have sex during the day? And how did it feel to be one of many... I was even curious if condoms were used, and STD's watched. Given the lifestyle... it's a reasonable question.

I wonder about Holly, and why everything she valued was about looks and exteriors. She constantly said she wanted to be loved for more than her looks, but even in Peepshow, it was all about being a blond sex kitten. How was that any different from GND or Playboy? Is she just not able to see past that? I admit, this is probably "my" problem... I just don't get the self-absorption of so many young women, or the focus so entirely on the physical, on being "pretty enough". What about an education? What about developing a spiritual life, not even religion... but just the acknowledgment that we are so much more than our looks.
But, Holly is young, and this has been a big life so far, with lots of learning. I would just really like to have read more about what these relationships were really all about... how in the world Hef got away with what he did with so many young women... and what was going on in Holly's mind and heart that would have allowed her to stay as long as she did. I think there is something missing in this book, and if she would have dug a little deeper, she could have explained it all.
