Elements of Power Elements is a classic text, with modern examples that upgrade its relevance. It is an excellent first book on the subject, but also a reference that I use time and time again. Robert Balog, Texas A&M University This is an essential textbook by a world-class author. Its greatest strength is that it does not compromise on any of the important technical breadth and depth aspects. The revision is timely and enhances some important materials including applications and examples. Philip T. Krein holds the Grainger Endowed Chair in Electric Machinery and Electromechanics as Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a past president of the IEEE Power Electronics Society, and holds twenty-eight U.S. patents, with additional patents pending.

I'm happy to say that I wasn't the least bit confused

I think I should start this review with a little confession: I don't read out of chronological order. However, that doesn't mean that I do end up doing that. Which is what happened with this book. The Curse Servant is actually the second book in a series featuring Dorian Lake, a hermetic charm and hex expert.

Phew! Now that it's out of my system, I'm happy to say that I wasn't the least bit confused! That's right, you are safe to read starting with this book if you want. You aren't going to be confused. J.P. Sloan did a great job seamlessly placing magic in a rather normal world without having to put too much exposition or confusing new reader. I was not only able to follow what was going on, gather what happened in the previous book, but I was also able to feel a connection with his characters. A serious feat.

There were two thoughts that came to mind the moment I started reading, The Curse Servant: 1. Serious creep factor! 2. Reminds me of Constantine.

Now, I don't mean comic Constantine or Keanu Reeves Constantine. I mean the TV Show. Sadly, I'm not well versed in the comic series, but I fell in love with the British demonologist when the show was airing. That said, J.P. Sloan's Dorian Lake reminded me of Constantine. He had a smartass snarky way of telling people off and a way to go against the rules while still being able to keep certain morals. Yes, his morality was put to a series of tests. Yes, he never really got a break. The only thing I'd say that wasn't Constantine, was the fact that Dorian Lake doesn't seem jaded. Not yet, anyways.

With this little connection, I fell in love with Dorian. I felt for him. I wanted him to be happy. I wanted the people he called family to be happy. I didn't want any of the bad things that were happening to ruin what world he was trying to cultivate. As a reader, I relished in the bad things.

J.P. Sloan made an epic that I'm am not only going to keep reading, but also get hard copies of. That's right, this man will be placed in my bookshelf next to the faves. And, that's saying something.

He weaves a twisty web of politics and magic. We have the internal politics of the magic world and the politics of our natural world. Each one has an agenda with the other and Dorian Lake is put in the middle of it all. As if this wasn't enough on his plate, Dorian is dealing with trying to find his soul which is missing in a limbo like world called Nether (not new news, he lost it in The Curse Merchant). On top of all of that, he is dealing with something out of his control that has taken over a little girl he considers a sister. Yep, his life sucks.

Nothing gets me more excited than a snarky man trying to do the right thing and being pitted into political intrigue with demonic like forces. If this isn't a winner, I don't know what is.

Great sequel!

I loved the second part in this exiting new series. The events that happened in The Curse Merchant still haunt Dorian in this new volume and there are some nasty surprises for him. Without giving the plot away, he seems to bite of more than he can chew when trying to help a little girl who's possessed.
There's lots of action, but at the same time we learn a bit more about the magic system and the different players who are active in this world. You can see the author setting up potential conflicts for later on in the series, which promises for some epic confrontations. At the same time, we learn a bit more of Dorian's past and how he became who he is now.

If you're looking to pick up a new Urban Fantasy series, give this one a try. Read The Curse Merchant first and then proceed quickly to this one. Well worth it.

Dorian Lake is a fascinating guy with some fun quirks. He curses and hexes

So after reading the first book, The Curse Merchant, I wanted to see where this was going to continue. Dorian Lake is a fascinating guy with some fun quirks. He curses and hexes, makes charms, and he sure has some lady drama LOL He also has his own personal drama with his soul not being with him. So when an offer turns up to help him find his soul before some big bad does, he is hesitant but knows he needs to do this.

Dorian is such an interesting character. He always seems mean and sassy, but he's actually quite soft hearted and I think he'd be hilarious in real life, though he'd probably get beat up! He's struggling with his friend who's the mayor's campaign guy, because ladies keep getting possessed and threatening him. Then he meets a guy who tells him he knows of a girl who can help him get his soul back. And then his best friend's daughter's life gets put on the line for his soul, things heat up. His friends, Julian, Ben, Edgar, they know about his soul, they just don't know exactly how bad this is because Dorian tries to hide it. He'll do almost anything to keep his friends and family safe. And we meet Elle, the little girl, and oh boy is that gunna tear you up. And Dorian is always willing to sacrifice for others.

The writing is well done. It's mysterious, full of magic, and suspense, and has some great action. And though you probably should read book one, you could read book two without trouble of knowing things from book one. The author adds just the right amount of back story to keep you in the loop without info dumps. It's an emotional book, and you'll want to follow Dorian along with his friends for more. The characters are so real and believable and I know I am going to want more. I can't wait to read the next book! 5 MAGICAL PAWS!

About the Author
Dr. Christina May is very familiar with pay-what-you-can community cafes. She served as the founding vice president of the F.A.R.M. Cafe board of directors and currently serves on the national OWEE board and the Unity Tables advisory board. Chris holds a PhD in nonprofit management and leadership, and her doctoral dissertation, titled The Pay-What-You-Can Nonprofit Restaurant Model: A Case Study, was the first known scholarly publication to describe the experience of operating a community cafe. Chris is a retired Naval Officer, with over 25 years of public service. She has completed a master of public administration degree, a graduate certificate in executive leadership, 30 additional graduate credits in management, and holds certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources and is a certified manager. Additionally, she serves as the board vice chair of the homeless/transitional facility in her area. She is employed as an adjunct professor at Appalachian State University, teaching nonprofit management courses.

And a cute love story? I was so ready

I was so excited to read this because the premise sounds ah-mazing and so different. A girl who can't leave her house because she has a rare illness? And a cute love story? I was so ready.

This is the kind of book you want to read snuggled up where you can just tear through it. I loved the artwork throughout the story; I feel like it greatly strengthened the book. And now onto the book, itself!

It was freaking adorable. Like, I don't even know how else to talk about it besides all the warm fuzzies it gave me. Maddie and Olly have the sweetest relationship and it walks a fine line of being insta-love and slow burn all at once. I know, right? I don't even understand it myself. I was totally rooting for them and also waiting for my Olly to move across the street, bring me a Bundt cake, write messages on his window for me, and IM me at questionable times of night (or early morning). Oh, and he does parkour.

Olly also comes packaged with family angst, which yes, we've seen lots of wounded YA boys. But as someone that deals with an alcoholic father, I appreciated how Olly's family drama was conveyed subtly and affected him deeply without being overly "WOE IS ME."

I really liked the relationship between Maddie and her mom. I'm ready to play Phonetical Scrabble (and yes, it is what it sounds like)! I also liked her nurse Carla, who was a constant in her life and feels like a friend and second mom. I was happy to see a strong female presence in this book. A+ work!

The only thing I was not happy with was The Plot Twist. I feel like it's something many, many people are going to be torn over. You're either going to love it or hate it. But whichever camp you fall into, I believe Everything, Everything is a worthy read for its great characters, different storytelling techniques, and fluffy-ness.

Nicola Yoon’s “Everything, Everything” is a wonderful novel that will make you laugh, but one that, as the story develops, may also make you cry. It is about loss, love, holding on, and letting go; it is about growing up and it is about acknowledging that our children do grow up.

Maddie Whittier has grown up believing she is allergic to everything. Living in a sterile home protected by an airlock that prevents outside contaminants from entering, Maddie’s world is limited to books, the internet, and two women. Her widowed physician mother and her nurse, Carla are the only individuals with whom she has physical contact. Maddie watches the outside world through her bedroom window. Fascinated by Olly, the teen-aged son of new neighbors, Maddie eventually strikes up an online friendship with him that evolves into something more. As Maddie struggles to gain her independence and to experience real life, conflict with her mother creates the basis for and resolution of the mystery surrounding Maddie’s illness.

“Everything, Everything” provides a lesson for parents who seek to control the lives of their children and its effect on a child’s dreams. “…I try not to want things I can’t have …” In denying them the opportunity to experience the triumphs and tragedies inherent in growing up, parents limit the child’s life to a sterile, safe existence. Maddie expresses the frustration this creates in a child. “…For the first time …I want more than I have …” She also recognizes the effect this has on her. “…Wanting leads to more wanting. There’s no end …” She realizes that, based on past events, her mother’s love is founded on the desperate desire to protect her. Because of this, Maddie – like many teens – is determined to live her own life differently. “…Love is a terrible thing and I want nothing to do with it …”

Maddie’s life story is made more personal through Nicola Yoon’s structuring of the novel. Narrated in the first person, the book incorporates Maddie’s personal annotations, e-mails, drawings, and medical charts into or between chapters including her observations and narrative discussions. Some portions appear as if they had been hand written rather than set in the same typeface as the majority of the text. I particularly enjoyed Maddie’s “spoiler reviews” in which she provides pithy one or two sentence synopses of classic novels she reads.

Although there is no profanity, at one point there is physical intimacy between Maddie and Olly. Parents may want to read the novel before giving it to readers at the lower end of the target audience – readers twelve and older – to decide whether it is appropriate for their child.

“Everything, Everything” is a novel that any reader should enjoy. It is easy to read, engaging, and a book that one will read in one sitting. It is a novel that will cause parents and teens to consider what it means to love and what it means to let go. This is definitely a 5-star read.

Cute concepts with a less-than-stellar execution

I suspect my main problems with "Everything, Everything" aren't especially fair to the book. A lot of fiction-reading has to do with accepting the premise of a book, or accepting the world in which a book takes place, or accepting the dramatic developments a book might have (as unrealistic as they may be). Fiction frequently deals with questions of extremes, and readers need to be capable of dealing with them. I struggled with Nicola Yoon's debut for a few reasons on this front (an aspect of the premise which ultimately made a later portion of the novel problematic for me), but I can hardly deny that it's an innovative entry in the YA field, and not an especially bad one overall.

I'll start with what I liked: I really enjoyed the creativity Yoon applied to her writing. Rather than straight text (or even straight text plus fairly believable chat-speak), Yoon incorporates a lot of imagery and art into the story. Snippets from Maddy's life fill these pages, in such a way that they truly don't feel like fillers. It's a tiny touch, really, and not something inherently original, but it works within the context of a story about a girl leading an extraordinarily and uniquely sheltered life.

The characterizations are a bit iffier. I found Maddy curious - aspects of her are remarkably familiar (a YA contemporary heroine who lives through literature???), but there's also a selfishness and naivety which makes her feel a bit more believable. Maddy's relationship with her mother was fascinating, and though aspects of the relationship ultimately angered me, I liked that Yoon did not simply ignore its existence. Olly meanwhile felt like a cardboard cutout of a YA hero-opposite-sheltered-girl. I wasn't entirely sure what I was supposed to like in him, and just... didn't. I couldn't really buy the romance and frankly would have preferred the story progress largely as it did but with friendship prevailing. Alas.

I can see why readers would love "Everything, Everything". There's a sweetness to it, and though I personally wasn't drawn into the romance, it's a familiar sort of story that will appeal again and again. The writing is simple and straight-forward, spiced up with the artwork and bonuses, and there's a very basic level appeal here to YA readers in particular. But I won't pretend that I personally enjoyed the book very much. With a dull romance, a problematic premise, and a rushed conclusion, the book felt a little undercooked to me. There was a lot of good here that could have grown into a fantastic book with just a bit more time, tight editing and reworking. Once again: alas.

This is a review for "The Anabolic Diet" by Dr DiPasquale. This eating template is also known as "The Anabolic Solution" and the "Metabolic Diet."

About the Author:

Dr. Di Pasquale at one time held world records in 5 different weight classes. Not only does he know what he is talking about academically but he practiced what he preached. He holds an honors degree in biological science, majoring in molecular biochemistry and genetics, and a medical degree from University of Toronto. He is certified as a Medical Review Officer by the Medical Review Officer Certification Council, and as a Master of Fitness Sciences by the International Sports Sciences Association. He's the only Canadian to ever total (in the 3 main lifts) 10 times his body weight

Some Additional History:

Vince Gironda AKA "Iron Guru" was a bodybuilder from the 50s that championed this style of dieting. From watching interviews of some of the "old timers" who used to train with the greats at golds gym; Arnold and his posse would pretty much eat like this (high fat and protein with a cheat day on the weekends) (Not over his whole career). Other notable past proponents of this type of diet are: Charles Poliquin, Chad Waterbury, and Rob Faigin.

Basics:

It's a high fat diet with a weekly carb load. Weekdays your carbs are under 30g. You become fat adapted and function well on fats after a few weeks of eating this way. Some have a hard time with the initiation phase, however, after they become fat adapted they tend to have more energy in general and "feel like they're running cleaner."

OMG! Because He Takes Me is the second book in the seductive new series, Because He Owns Me, by Hannah Ford and may I just say - WOW! Like really, really WOW! I began reading Ford's work a few months ago when I discovered her What He Wants Series. She seems to specialize in serialized multi-installment novels with each release being the equivalent of one or two chapters totaling 35 to 50 pages each. I find that I actually enjoy this concept very much as long as the books are released weekly or bi-monthly and hers generally are. Each book is a short quick read and perfect for what I like to call a palette cleanser - something to stop sensory overload, relax my mind and enjoy in between heavy, full-length novels. Ms Ford is exceptionally talented in crafting realistic stories with complex characters and suspenseful plot twists. She also excels at maintaining the momentum of the story throughout the entire book without having to use empty filler dialogue to pace the continuation of the plot. If it's there, you better believe it means something and will be important to the story at some point. She has quickly become one of my favorite authors. The story is exciting, enchanting, romantic, seductive and arousing. The dialogue is exceptionally well written in the first person with alternating his and her points of view although the main pov seems to come from the female lead of the story. The characters are captivating, engaging, intriguing and sexy as sin. Ford skillfully combines these elements into a delightfully entertaining cocktail of adult romance with a sensual twist of BDSM. Hubba! Hubba!

Book One: This story features recent college graduate Adriana O'Connor who has recently moved from Michigan to New York City to find a job, hopefully in a publishing house and start her new life. Although not unfamiliar with the ways of the world, she is quite naive. And apparently, she is also quite submissive as is quickly discovered by handsome, charismatic billionaire Callum Wilder, CEO and Founder of Wilder Holdings, LLC. Adriana has agreed to meet Nathan, whom she met on a dating app, for a blind date at Whipped, a club located in Midtown Manhattan. Nathan is a no-show and leaves the lovely Adriana waiting alone. Adriana is totally unaware that whipped is a BDSM Light Club and is caught totally off guard when she catches the eye of someone else... someone dark, handsome and much more experienced...someone who wants to dominate and own her...for only one night. What? One night??? Handsome billionaire Callum Wilder is immediately taken with the innocent young beauty sitting alone in the bar but Callum does not date nor does he do relationships. So what does he want with the lovely, innocent Adriana??? Well. he wants one night only of complete possession and mind-blowing sex! What??? Yep, one night and what arrogant and self assured Callum Wilder wants, he pursues and conquers - for one night only, of course! Oh my! She ran away from him at the club and tried to put the entire incident out of her mind. But apparently it was never out of Callum's mind because somehow he finds her the very next day and all but demands that she join him for lunch. Of course it's not a lunch date because the arrogant Callum Wilder doesn't do dates. Riigghhtt.......not a date then!!! He's determined to have her and still wants her to submit to him for one night. Can he convince her to reconsider and accompany him on a business trip to Florida where he intends to have his wicked way with her - for only one night, of course! Nope, she refuses his offer until........Well, I'll never tell! Yep, the unworldly Adriana is definitely in way over her head with the sophisticated, charming and very dominant Callum Wilder and if she isn't careful, she may just find herself swimming with a shark! Oh my gracious! Buckle up my lovelies! Here we go again! This is the one we've been waiting for.....Does she or doesn't she??? And who is Rose??? I'm dying to know! I can hardly wait for the next installment! Deliciously seductive, seriously sexy, completely captivating and wonderfully entertaining! What more could you ask of a great read? Not a darn thing!!!

Too good and too short

This story just gets better with every page. Cullum invited Adriana for a weekend in Florida with a contract for one night of sex. She's not supposed to ask him any questions but amazingly he spent hours asking her about her life and why she wants to work in publishing. It's not surprising that when they get back home he sends her off with a " nice to have met you". While she knew this was his way, she's still hurt and angry. It's evident that she's young and inexperienced while he's been picking up women and walking away for a long time.
I am interested in seeing what her job interview brings about and why Cullum arranged it.....because you know that he did. No one gets a job interview at a company they never applied to.

Naïveté meets billionaire

Adriana is a somewhat naive, recent college grad. Callum is a twenty-eight-year-old billionaire entrepreneur. They meet, they set off on a one-night tryst that surprises and amazes Adriana. She begins to see the many facets that make up the man that Callum is. Some she likes and some she cannot begin to understand. Callum is amazed that Adriana had only been in the city two days before they met. She is unemployed and seeking a job in publishing. In spite of his usual contract with submissives, could Callum be attempting to help Adriana find a position? Stay tuned for the next segment of the series.

Grade 3-6 It's another outing for the companions of Bunnicula (Atheneum, 1979) the (supposedly) vampire rabbit. This time, they are on a camping trip with the Monroes, their cheerfully oblivious owners. Chester suspects danger from the outset, and his worst suspicions are confirmed when the Monroes set up camp near Bud, Spud, and their dog, Dawg, a sinister threesome right out of Deliverance. When Dawg leads Howie, Harold, and Chester on a chase deep into the surrounding forest and they become lost, Chester tells them a scary story to lull Dawg to sleep so that they can escape to rescue the Monroes who, they are sure, are in mortal danger. The story, of course, turns out to be about Bunnicula, Chester's favorite subject, and his origins, which turn out to be similar to the plot of any standard vampire movie and which, curiously, seem to involve Bud and Spud. Dawg brings about logical explanations which convince even Chester until he learns about Pete's secret merit badge project: breeding Bunnicula. . . . This fourth story in the series is the weakest, relying too much on readers' familiarity with vampire movie cliches and tolerance for weak puns. The journey into Bunnicula's roots is labored at best. The central conceit of this is done wittily but is getting threadbare. Is Chester right or merely hysterical? Readers would like to know. Christine Behrmann, New York Public Library

Chester Strikes Again

On a family camping trip Chester and Harold get separated from their family and having a HOWLING night-time adventure complete with Chester's bedtime story. And as usual Chester imagination gets the best of him. You also find that the old saying "You can't judge a book by its cover" is true. James Howe delivers another great mystery.

Good story within a story

It starts out as a family outing and ends up as a horror story! But most of all, I liked the story within a story which was the story of Bunnicula's parents-Bella and Boris. Boris and Bella are the results of an experiment done by a scientist who is immortal. "Nighty Nightmare" is definitely one of James Howe's better stories. I also liked "Bunnicula A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery" and "Howliday Inn".

About the Author
Carl Gustav Jung was, together with Freud and Adler, one of the three great pioneers in modern psychiatry. He was born in 1865 in Switzerland, where he studied medicine and psychiatry and later became one of Sigmund Freud’s early supporters and collaborators. Eventually, serious theoretical disagreements (among them Jung’s view of the religious instinct in man) led to a doctrinal and personal break between the two famed psychiatrists. Dr. Jung was the author of many books, and he lived and practiced for many years in his native Zurich. He died in 1961.

This book reveals the nature of psyche in very explicit terms. It goes right to the heart of who or what we are, and how we relate to the grand universal schematic. There is no doubt that the insightful information contained in this book will connect the dots and tie up loose ends for the introspective reader.

If you are interested in dreams, then Jung is for you. Great book.

Love CG Jung's books. Be ready to start analyzing dreams when you read Jung.
The biggest take away I got from his books are that the characters in your dreams are representatives/symbols of objects in your life.

The subconscious has to use symbols and images to represent these things which your dreams must work out. Jung would keep a log of all his dreams and suggest that you do to. Then you can piece together what your dreams are trying to tell you over time.

If you are interested in dreams, then Jung is for you.

Excellent but short read

Short and sweet! This book was essentially an apocalyptic warning from Jung to the reader on the dangers of collectivism. He grapples this issue in the only way possible, by addressing the importance and primacy of the individual and his/her experience and understanding of self.

This book is pretty short, I read it in a single sitting so the person of short attention span will gain a lot from purchasing this book. Overall it will suit the longtime psychologist, the philosopher, or the person seeking to know more about himself.

Would highly recommend!
