About the Author
Deborah Fish Ragin is a Professor of Psychology at Montclair State University, as well as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC where she is also involved in research.
Ragin is a reviewer for the international journal Social Science and Medicine, and the Journal for Interpersonal Violence, and is on the Editorial Board for the American Journal of Nursing.

Informative revelations

I really admire the author for giving a rich history of health practices in ancient civilizations, most notably, the African culture (primarily Egypt). She is one of the few authors (as far as I know) that acknowledges "medical practices and health remedies in sub-Saharan Africa art found in Ghana, Nigeria, the Republic of Congo, and Burkina Faso" (p. 9).
What was especially interesting to me was the admission that the ancient Egyptians conducted brain surgery. Having been there twice (Egypt), I saw first-hand artwork reflecting the tools used by the ancient Egyptians to conduct surgery on the brain. The author notes: "In some cases the art depicts health procedures such as craniotomies (a cut into the skull, usually to gain access to the brain" (p. 9).
While the book brought out interesting information, it also vague, and at times contained questionable statements. It is not without its subtle intrigue as well. For instance, with respect to vaccines in modern Africa, she noted that until 2003 polio was thought to be under control throughout the world, until an outbreak occurred in good old Africa. What happened?
In making the point the vaccines really do help stem the tide of some diseases, the author argued that since Nigeria (in its northern region) discontinued polio vaccinations in 2003, there was a sudden outbreak of the disease at that time in that region of the county; also in six other nearby African countries (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, Ghana, and Togo).
Here's where the intrigue comes in: "The reason for the suspension [of polio vaccinations in norther Nigeria] is unclear." Some informed observers believe that foreign governments tainted the vaccination with experimental drugs, effectively using African children as live guinea pigs (a la the Tuskegee Experiment). Often times, what's left unsaid speaks volumes.
Even with certain shortcomings, the book is still a good read. You can learn much from it.

What you expected.

The book includes all the basic health psychology concepts. It has great arrivals of examples in every chapter. But the presentation is a little dull.
