About the Author
Anton Jaks began his career in Astrology in the early 1970s after graduating from University of California, Santa Barbara. He was a partner in a metaphysical bookstore in Santa Barbara called Starlight Books, and during that time taught and practiced Astrology.
Later, Anton pursued graduate studies at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, studying primarily Hindu and Buddhist Tantra and Yoga, as well as other Eastern religions.
Anton now spends time traveling in the West with his wife Katherine, practicing Tibetan Buddhism, in the school of Nyingma, primarily as taught by Thinley Norbu Rinpoche.
He writes on Astrology in order to show how the ancient art and science can be used as a tool for personal liberation. His main interest is in restoring the study and practice of Astrology to the prominence it once enjoyed before becoming diluted by the New Age self-absorption with "personal journeys" and the like. That is why he advocates abandoning the Tropical Zodiac and using the Sidereal Zodiac that was used by the ancient Egyptians and Chaldeans.

Totally worth it

I purchased this book cheaper at Lulu, but originally I saw it here on Amazon. For the price, I felt I got more than what I was expecting. I have bought other Astrology books before, which have been a crap shoot, some good and others a total waste of money and time reading. I thought this book had a lot of good information that was useful in my study and highly recomend it to my friends who are also studying with me.

Good sidereal astrology handbook

You wouldn't know it from the title, but the author is a sidereal astrologer and writes from that perspective. As of the date of this review, to my knowledge this is the only book he's written on astrology.
Mr. Jaks explains the difference between the sidereal and tropical zodiacs, the many shortcomings and even harmful ideology of the tropical, and why the sidereal is more valid and real. He covers a lot of ground in this book: signs, planets, houses, aspects, the fixed stars, transits, progressions, returns, etc., with very insightful and useful commentary. He advocates reinstating the "true" astrology that was practiced by the ancients (sidereal), before it was corrupted by the Greeks with the annual calculation of the vernal equinox which is moving backward relative to the constellations (tropical).
Quote: "Tropical astrology has become the plaything of anyone with a new theory about human spiritual evolution, and then to the movement of psychological astrology that has led to astrology becoming a tool for narcissistic self-absorbed study. People, however, want results that are relevant to their activity in the real world in which they live. Charts done using the Sidereal Zodiac are more accurate. Period. Hence, I use the Sidereal Zodiac, and I recommend that you do the same."
