I can say without a doubt that I was made to be in a classroom. I followed the footsteps of my father, a 35-year middle school math teaching veteran, into this challenging yet rewarding career. My college experience began as a community college student at Lakeland College in Mattoon, Illinois. From there, I received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Eastern Illinois University and a Master of Science in Mathematics from Southern Illinois University. I accepted a tenure-track faculty position at Parkland College, where I have taught developmental and college-level courses for 15 years. I had the opportunity to begin writing textbooks shortly after I started teaching at Parkland. My then department chair and mentor, James W. Hall, and I co-authored several textbooks in Beginning and Intermediate Algebra. In the fall of 2011, our department began discussing the idea of creating two tracks through our beginning and intermediate algebra courses. The idea stemmed from two issues. First, most of our beginning and intermediate algebra students were headed to either our Liberal Arts Math or our Introduction to Statistics course. Second, we wanted to beef up intermediate algebra to better prepare those students who were headed to college algebra. These were two competing ideas! Increasing the algebraic rigor of these courses seemed to “punish” students who were not heading to college algebra. With the two track system, we implemented a solution that best serves both groups of students. I have to admit that I was initially concerned that offering an alternate path through developmental mathematics for students not planning to take college algebra would lead to a lowering of standards. However, my participation in our committee investigating this idea led me to believe it was possible to offer a rigorous course that was exceedingly more appropriate for this group of students. Since there were no materials for the course, I began creating my own and was paired by McGraw Hill with Dave Sobecki. Together, we have created the material that I have been using for class testing. After a semester and a half of piloting these materials and seeing the level of enthusiasm and engagement in the mathematical conversations of my students, I am now convinced that this is an ideal course to refine and offer. As a trusted colleague told me, “this is just a long overdue idea.” Outside of the classroom and away from the computer, I am kept educated, entertained and ever-busy my wonderful wife, Nikki, and our two children, Charlotte, 6 and Jake, 5. I am an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoy playing recreational softball and golf in the summertime with colleagues and friends.

When I rented it they said I would have it ...

When I rented it they said I would have it until December 6 (the end of the school semester) then they sent me an email on Nov. 6 telling that my last day to have the book was Nov 7 and wanted me to pay more money to extend the rental. This is a scam and a rip off. They know that you will need it until the end of the semester and advertise that you will have it until the end of the semester then half way through the take it away and hit you up for more money. Don't ever rent school books from them.

Good short stories

Good stories

I really enjoyed the six Novellas contained in this book. They are about the Rescue Squad in the Hidden Cove Fire Department. Each story highlights the life of a firefighter and their journey toward love.
All the stories took the life of a firefighter and showed that each one is different has a different life, married, single, young, old, woman, male, but they all have one thing in common - they want to save lives.
The stories have some common links - two are an arsonist and a reporter. The stories have a lot of fire scenes which you can tell are well researched and very interesting. I like reading about the equipment and training -
It was great to see the characters from many of Ms. Shay's books featured in these short stories. To see how everyone is doing. I have read almost all of her books and it was great to see all my "friends"
I was happy to review this book--I was given a complimentary copy but would have bought the book anyway--If you like Ms Shay and you like firefighters this one is for you.

Wonderfully Done!

Whether full length novels or short stories, you can't miss with Kathryn Shay! This collection of short stories had it all: mystery, romance, laughter and tears. I couldn't put the book (actually, my iPad) down! I had to tether myself to the outlet as I ran out of battery and couldn't wait to recharge my tablet. The stories are a series that has a mystery tying them together. Even though this is a continuation of her "America's Bravest: Hidden Cove" series, they do stand alone from the original full length books BUT I recommend you don't miss out on a wonderful series! I recommend you get the original series too: "After the Fire," "On the Line," and "Nothing More to Lose."

love these stories!

I have really enjoyed Kathryn Shay's books, and this was no exception.
These stories were really interesting to me, as I have no firefighters close to me. What a brave life they lead.

It truly boggles my mind the amount of research that Ms Shay did for these stories. But so worth it, and I sure appreciate that she did.

I care about the characters, and want to read more about them. I'll be checking out more of her firefighter books - well, scratch that, I'll be checking out more of her books - of any kind.

As always, Ashley Bryan, age 90, has produced another winner. Ashley, the consummate storyteller, includes the oral tradition from his "roots" at the heart of many of his works. Can't Scare Me is no exception. Coupled with his bright and colorful illustrations, the book will appeal to everyone from young children to the "child" in every adult.

She also has worked for the world's largest private printing company, a major metropolitan air pollution control agency, a community college and political campaigns. Her career includes working for a Fortune 100 company coordinating art and printing for talking children's books. In that capacity, she worked directly with many creative teams including those at Marvel Comics, Golden Books, Mr. Rogers, Berenstain Bears and Steven Spielberg's "ET" book staff.

Great validation of Secrets to the Public.

From the minute I picked up this book, I realized its truthful nature. Yes!! There are activities at question right here in our tranquil little mountain tourist area. The book is laid out like an important document, clear concise, easy to read and easy to understand. Mary obviously has a knack for journalism and making complex things understandable. She in no way made these stories sensationalist or conspiracy theory like, more like a conversation with the people who witnessed, who documented and some of whom risked their lives to bring information to the public. I thank you for this important information and hope that all who order this book find it helpful in seeing a bigger picture of what is occurring in the background while we all are amused with political and social antics run amok.

Excellent reading!

This is a very interesting book to read. This material is controversial and raises some questions which need addressed. The presence of such locations with extremely expensive equipment, and at least strange behavior of people associated with them raises many questions. Why the expense, if it is a low functioning facility? Why all of the strange behavior? Why the foreign uniforms? These are all reasonable questions upon regarding the activity. I found this book interesting and courageous, for the author to pen. Recommended for those interested in similar material or for Appalachian studies.

Complete and utter crap.

We have this at the library only because this it is a local author. Since my husband was in the military for 22 years I thought I'd bring it home and have him verify some of the "facts" in the book. Calling it non-fiction is being kind. Just basic stuff, the two weapons identified are way off. Neither of them are the guns the author claims they are. (One is a Sig Sauer. She claims it was an M-4 or an AR-15 and she got the picture straight off Goggle images.) There are outlandish claims that don't ring true especially if one has any knowledge of how the military works at all. She also claims that aliens gave us their nuclear technology and that the military has made surveillance robots that look exactly like birds, one of which is Antarctic, and a honey bee (complete with conveniently blurred photos). The author also makes claims to being a journalist and working a "Fortune 100 company" and "for the world's largest private printing company,a major metropolitan air pollution control agency, a community college and political campaigns." All nicely ambiguous and nothing I could verify online. She sounds like a total fantasist. Don't waste your money.

Very powerful, but not a "feel good" book

Interspersed among his answers to inquiries in this book is Art's story of his personal search. This is a real story written by a real man on a long meandering path, full of stumbles, false starts, loss, and depression. But every fall is followed by a regroup and increased determination. His perseverance along the path is incredible.
As a rookie to these sort of things, this book initially had me feeling pretty scared. What have I stumbled into? This self realization stuff doesn't look like a happily ever after kind of fairy tale. But further on is the beautiful, yet specific and articulate description of his realization experience. And a little further yet is something that spoke volumes to me - a photo of the author with the most genuine, honest smile I have ever seen. I think I can understand why the journey is worthwhile.

A seekers dream of a book (and potentially his worst nightmare)

What spiritual seeker doesn't like a good awakening story? This one spans twenty-seven years and is filled with pitfalls, twists and turns, but ultimately demonstrates the characteristic that is most necessary in any search - perseverance. His personal journal entries mirror that of any desperate seeker and leave the reader hopeful that if this guy made the journey, so can I. Interspersed with his personal story, however, are little time-bombs of wisdom in the guise of innocent questions posed by seekers looking for his help. I found myself in many of these questions and his answers are provocative, sometimes maddeningly so, but only for the ego! This book is gem for those on a path of self-inquiry or involved in group work. It's also a map of sorts - away from the unreal - that ultimately leads to Love.

Transcendent truth in accessible language

A personal and thorough account of Ticknor's pursuit and discovery of self knowledge. Extensively illustrates the fruits and value of working with others on the path. Written with warmth and unpretentious clarity.
