About the Author
Allen E. Ivey is Distinguished University Professor (emeritus) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. A Diplomate in counseling psychology, Dr. Ivey is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, American Counseling Association, and Asian-American Psychological Association. His work in diversity led him to be honored as a Multicultural Elder at the National Multicultural Conference and Summit. He has written more than 40 books and 200 articles and chapters, translated into 20 languages. Dr. Ivey's undergraduate work was in psychology at Stanford University, followed by a Fulbright Grant to study social work at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. His doctorate is from Harvard University. He is the originator of the Microskills approach, basic to this book.

Mary Bradford Ivey is Senior Consultant at Microtraining/Alexander Street Press and a former Vice President of Microtraining Associates. She has served as visiting professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; the University of Hawai'i, Manoa; and Flinders University, South Australia. She is a retired elementary counselor and a former Stress Management counselor at Amherst College. Her comprehensive elementary program was named one of the top ten in the nation at the Christa McAuliffe Conference. Dr. Ivey earned a master's degree in counseling from the University of Wisconsin, and a doctorate in organizational development at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is the author or co-author of twenty books (translated into multiple languages), as well as several articles and chapters. A Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), she has presented workshops and keynote lectures with Dr. Allen Ivey throughout the world. She is also known for her work in promoting and explaining development guidance and counseling in the United States and abroad. She is one of the first fifteen honored Fellows of the American Counseling Association and is also a recipient of the American Counseling Association's Ohana Award for her work in multicultural counseling.

Carlos P. Zalaquett is a Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education at The Pennsylvania State University, and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the State of Florida. He is also the Vice-President for the United States and Canada of the Society of Interamerican Psychology and Past-President of the Florida Mental Health Counseling Association, the Suncoast Mental Health Counselors Association (SMHCA), and the Florida Behavioral Health Alliance. Dr. Zalaquett is an internationally recognized expert on mental health, counseling, psychotherapy, diversity, and education and has conducted workshops and lectures in eleven countries. He is the author or co-author of more than 50 scholarly publications and five books, including the Spanish version of BASIC ATTENDING SKILLS. He has received many awards, such as the USF Latinos Association's Faculty of the Year, the Tampa Hispanic Heritage's Man of Education Award, and the SMHCA Emeritus Award. His current research uses a neuroscience-based framework to compare brain activity and self-reported decision making. This cutting edge research integrates mind, brain, and body in the exploration of human responses central to counseling and psychotherapy.

Don't bother with the Kindle edition of this book!

This is a good book, but the Kindle version is almost worthless. The case studies and tables are in very small print that will not enlarge. These are critical components of this book that you will need a magnifying glass to read on the Kindle. All other text in the book will enlarge, but not these portions.

It should have an access code so we can get to the material for FREE, and not have to buy them. The books needs to have a CD or online access codes so we can see the therapy sessions and apply the theories accordingly.

useful to a point, but ultimately severely limited

I am instructing a course in interviewing skills in a graduate training program. This course was, up until this semester, taught by another faculty at the university who had been using Ivey for the last few semesters. In order to maintain consistency (as well as avoid a whole course redesign in the 2 weeks I had to prepare after I found out about the instructor switch) I decided to use Ivey. Ivey presents some fairly basic, though immensely useful interviewing skills. However, the authors' naive and incomplete approach to the discussion of multiculturalism can be so saturated throughout the text that it interferes w/ the basic concepts. The example interviews are of the most unrealistic and poorly scripted that I have read in any therapy or interviewing text (which is saying something). The subsections shift so dramatically and, at many times, so disparately w/ the content of the chapter that I wonder if this text couldn't be 1/2 as long and contain the same vital content. I also was a little irritated that upon seeking out a few references I found the original sources to have either been over-interpreted or completely unconnected to the actual citation. I think next year we'll use something like the original MI text as it provides similar discussion of basic interviewing skills w/in the context of a technically precise, coherent, and empirically supported model for change.

Two days later, when Rodney is being pursued by a ruthless drug trafficker, he barely has time to regret his unsanitary ways. The entire story is a little over 4200 words, or 60 pages. It is written at the level of my Spanish 2 students: mostly in the present tense but with a spattering of advanced grammar when needed. Don't worry about either the grammar or the vocabulary; anything even slightly complicated is translated at the bottom of the page. There is also a complete glossary at the end of the book so that this story is 100% comprehensible to all readers.

Mike Peto is a Spanish teacher who teaches his classes through a community storytelling method called TPRS. We don't ever waste our time with grammar worksheets or drilling vocabulary... that is boring! Instead we create, tell and read stories that are compelling and 100% comprehensible. As it turns out, that is how everyone learned their first language: sitting around the camp fire listening to stories. It is also a really efficient way to learn a second, third or fourth language as well. At the age of 44 Mike is starting to learn his fifth language.

This was such a fun book to read

This was such a fun book to read! There is a lot of suspense and plot twists to keep readers motivated. I also love the sense of humor and word play in this book. Advanced students of Spanish should be able to read this book quickly and with ease. For beginning students, there is a very thorough glossary and plenty of definitions, making this book accessible to students at a variety of levels. That polyglots guy is the best!

We love Splat the Cat in my house; I'm just as excited to read the books as my daughter is. They are perfect bedtime reads; not too long, but very cute. I LOVE the illustrations-they are so over the top cute!!! In this book, Splat overhears his parent's talking about taking them to an amusement park for his sister's birthday..but he has to keep it a secret! Even from his best buddy Seymore! Can he do it??? Ah, the suspense ;) Love the books, crazy about the illustrations. My favorite Splat the Cat book is 'the overdue library book'.

The story of the man who never comes back from sea has been embedded in the lore of eastern Canada. Moore's third work of fiction (after Alligator) imagines the impact one such disaster—the 1982 sinking of the Ocean Ranger—has on Helen O'Mara, a mother of three small children whose husband, Cal, dies at sea. The narrative jumps in time from Helen's life with Cal, the accident itself and the years after in which Helen tries to keep her life intact. Whether it is Helen longing for companionship, designing wedding dresses or learning yoga, everything she does is done with a view to Cal. Most scenes are quietly reflective, and Moore's strength is her ability to inject evocative images and expressive tones to otherwise static and overly earnest passages (as in Is this what a life is? Someone, in the middle of cleaning the bathroom, remembers you tasting the ocean on your fingers long after you're gone.) Could not finish it.....

This book was a gift from a dear friend....so I tried. I think she chose it because, like the main character, I was suddenly widowed at a fairly young age.
I read 100 pages and then decided life is too short and there are too many other books I want to read.
This is the first book I have read by this author who has won a prize for an earlier work. Her style seems to be based on some advice she was once given to insert details and descriptions. She does have a LOT of details which are for the most part, not illuminating in any way. I remember one particular tedious section when Jane is buying a cookie at an airport ....excruciating detail on the store clerk and the difficulty she had in finding the cookie Jane wanted. I finally gave up the book when I came upon two non plausible parts. Jane has had a week long fling with John in a country foreign to both. No further contact until Jane calls him on his cell phone 6 months later. No explanation as to how she had his cell number as they were apparently pretty much inseparable during this week and parted with the understanding that it was over. BUT after Jane hangs up on John we are told that John doesn't have Jane's number to call her back. LOOK ON YOUR CELL PHONE JOHN - even I (old as I am) know that. Then we are told that in 1982 or 1983 when John (age 10 or 11) goes to a school counselor with troubling dreams after the death of his father, the school counselor asks him if he "had an orgasm" because the dreams had some sexual overtones. Please - I cannot believe any school counselor would use that word or make that inquiry....
Others seem to love this book - but I can't figure out why.

A Powerful Novel Brilliantly Written

Just beyond the middle of this incredible novel, the central character, Helen, is part of a yoga class. And it serves as the perfect metaphor for the theme of the novel. The yoga instructor, as they do, is uttering those ¡§yoga¡¨clicheVs about finding inner peace, blah, blah, blah. And Helen thinks, ¡§I am supposed to achieve balance.¡¨ This might well have been the opening of the novel.
In 1982 The Ocean Ranger, a vessel owned by an oil company, sinks in the North Atlantic. And everyone aboard drowns, including Cal, Helen's husband, leaving her with three young children and, unknown to her at the time, another on the way. In 2008 Helen has yet been unable to come to any resolution about his death and the impact it has had upon her life while she waits for her oldest and only son, John, to arrive from his world travels with a woman who is pregnant with his first baby, a woman with whom he had a one-week affair in Iceland seven months earlier. So in a sense this novel is about that one moment in time except, of course, it isn't.
We are provided with up-close and personal grief and what it has done to the central character and, in turn, her four children, most especially the older three. It is very powerful and so artistically handled in the hands of Lisa Moore, the author of Alligator. (I had been ill-informed about February being a sequel to Alligator. If it is¡Xand I read Alligator before getting into this one¡XI certainly don't see any connections except they both take place in Newfoundland.) Alligator is very well written, very engaging. This one is even more so.
Helen has spent her adult life being ¡§grateful for all the brief escapes¡¨ offered her, often escapes she creates by allowing her mind to imagine what happened and how others responded and thought. If ever there was a postmodern existential novel that reaches out and grabs, this is it. There is no end to grief. None.
Lisa Moore is a master at point of view, skillfully allowing us into Helen's head (and occasionally other characters' heads, especially her son John's) with what essentially are scattered thoughts that all of us have, seemingly disconnected ones. She bounces back and forth in time, giving us little pieces, almost like doing a picture puzzle but without the package cover to guide us. And that is the beauty of the writing; it is so lacking in a linear plot line. So as a reader you say, ¡§Wow. So that is what happened back...¡¨
The style fascinates me. But it could take some ¡§getting used to¡¨ for readers who have not experienced what I will call a collage style, one in which thoughts from the present and past exist together, often in the same paragraph. But it is a wonderful style if the reader gives the first few pages a chance. There are no quotation marks for dialogue, not even question marks when a question is ask. But it works brilliantly and makes this such a unique reading experience.
Helen's has been a rudderless life. She is clearly depressed, a woman who refuses any of the drugs suggested to her, a woman who parents with a because I told you to attitude. Now in her mid-fifties she wonders if she might find love somehow, somewhere. I will not disclose how she goes about doing so. But we know nothing will work out because it is a world where essentially love seems not to exist much, at least not for Helen who truly did love Cal. And he apparently loved her as well.
I can honestly say this is one of the most moving novels I have ever read.

Emerging from Grief

This book by Canadian novelist Lisa Moore is on the long list for the 2010 Man Booker Prize. It is a curious choice, because it is a quiet book, entirely domestic in scale, in which very little actually happens. I suppose that Anne Enright's THE GATHERING (the 2007 winner) would be the closest comparison. Lisa Moore's novel is similar in being centered around a single family in the aftermath of a death, and moving freely through several decades. But Moore does not have Enright's hysteria or obsessive sexuality, and I appreciate her for that. What she does have is sheer good writing, rich characters, and a sense of truth.

At fifty-six, Helen O'Mara is the mother of four grown children and the grandmother of two. She had only just become pregnant with her last child when her husband Cal was drowned in the collapse of the Ocean Ranger oil rig off the coast of Newfoundland in 1982 (a real historical disaster). For more than a quarter-century, she has mastered her grief, seeing her children grow to adulthood, and building up a business for herself as a dressmaker. But she feels unfulfilled and lonely, and will remain so until she comes to terms with Cal's death. The book jacket suggests that there may be undisclosed secrets here, but that is not Moore's way. The facts are as they always were, but the unexpected homecoming of her son John (who also works in the oil industry) triggers a series of memories in Helen, jumping freely in meticulously-labeled short sections between 1972 and the present, which eventually lay out her entire adult life in some kind of a pattern, and enable her to think towards a future.

When reading (and not especially liking) Ayelet Waldman's recent RED HOOK ROAD, another novel about a family in a coastal town dealing with grief, I put down my disenchantment to a personal dislike for novels that were small-scale and domestic, rather than dealing with large themes. But FEBRUARY is even smaller in scale, and I enjoyed it greatly. Mostly because Moore writes so well. Little descriptive touches such as "the scrudge-squeak of a naked foot on the royal blue gym mats" in a yoga class, or a tired woman sitting down in a coffee shop who "unzips her jacket and sighs so deeply she falls into herself like a cake." But more than that -- she writes the way people think and talk, in interrupted phrases and non-sequiturs, illuminated by sudden flashes of insight. Yes, there are flaws in the book: it tends to meander a little, some promising ideas go nowhere (such as the fact that John works for a company that perpetuates the same risks that killed his father), and the conclusion is perhaps too pat. But the sense of being inside the mind and heart of such a well-observed character counts for a great deal.

Typical Alan Black Tale

I really enjoyed it. I guess I'm left a bit bitter over the ending though. I think another thirty pages could have made this book go from good to great. This has the typical aw shucks hero tale flavor that Alan Black is a master of and we all like. It's a good book, just not as good as the first one. By the points:

-The end could have been a lot better and more complete. It left a lot in the air and came on suddenly. Not quite a cliffhanger but let's just say a sequel is mandatory.
-Definitely a "ground pounder" tale, not a spacer tale (for better or worse)
-Like all Alan Black, the characters are a bit goody-goody and circumstances are a bit too handy
-Main character wastes less and less time on self doubt
-Started good exploration into several alien species
-Like what happened to the main character's evolution, both figuratively and literally
-A lot of things were nicely positioned for a strong sequel
-Kind of got tired of the random scenes where the one barely dressed hottie dropped in to shoot/stab something or reveal some handy info all while we had to receive gratuitous commentary on her butt, nipples, or outline. I'm not a prude - it just became a bit repetitive.
-Would have liked to have had more insight into the main villain race's viewpoint / motivations

This is #2 in the series, so if you haven't read the first do that first. It has necessary background and you don't want to miss out on the goodness of the original book.

Sequels are cool, this one is no exception

Sometimes just getting to know a character in a book leaves you a little down after the last chapter, so the sequel became necessary. This is no exception. Alan Black proves his wordsmith abilities once more. THX Alan
Midshipman Stone has come a long way in a short time. Now facing challenges nightmares are made of he makes marines proud to serve along side.
The armed forces have there own shorthand, language , jargon that is full of colorful descriptive often blue in nature gallows humor. Alan captures it a way that lets you into there world without feeling like your trespassing.
The widgets and gadgets in these books make more sense than some non-fiction books out there, it's just a fun read. You can see an influence of some of the great works of, Heinlein, Asimov and Spider Robinson in the telling of the story.
This is a must read for syfi fans, young folks, young at heart, prior military/active duty personnel, single moms, high schoolers, middle schoolers, winners of the German marksmanship metal schutzenschnur, and you.
When there is a third, hope Bar Tuttle makes the cover... read the book you'll understand.

It's great for wanting to read

Read it in a sitting with a couple of bathroom breaks. For trying to find something decent in this genre to read from start to finish, this book is definitely 5 stars. My reason for 3 stars is only subjective in nature to the pg-pg 13 theme that it ultimately was, that otherwise hinted at for a more mature reader. ( not referring to grotesque violence or sex, but when the hard questions of character choices are made, they are answered not avoided and with the weighted consequences of said actions) so when someone tries to kill you or has killed thousands they don't merely brush it off or give them chance and chance again to kill you. Even into the sequel... Trying to review without spoiling is hard and I'll finish with this, I'll probably keep reading the series even though it's not what I'm looking for.
