About the Author
Daniel Tudor is from Manchester, England, and graduated with a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford University. He has lived in Seoul, Korea for a number of years, and served as The Economist's Korea Correspondent from 2010-2013. His first book, 'Korea: The Impossible Country' received strong praise and has also been translated into Korean, Chinese, Polish, and Thai. Daniel is a regular columnist for a Korean newspaper, the Joongang Ilbo, and has commented on Korea-related topics many times for the BBC, Al Jazeera, and others. He is also co-founder of The Booth, a small chain of craft beer pubs.

James Pearson is a foreign correspondent for Reuters in Seoul, where he covers politics and general news in North and South Korea. He holds a BA (hons) in Chinese and Korean from the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and a Master's of Philosophy (M.Phil) in Oriental Studies from the University of Cambridge.

Thorough, informative and fascinating

Whether you are a casual DPRK observer or hold a greater interest in the country, this book is a must have for anyone looking to increase their knowledge of North Korea.

If you've tired of reading speculative gossip about Kim Jong Un's supposed cheese addiction and you want actual facts about the development of the DPRK, you're on the right track with this book. It's a compelling insight into the everyday life of the average North Korean.

It's refreshing to finally read something that focuses on the important changes that are happening in the hermit kingdom. And those important changes are coming from the ground up: the 24 million inhabitants of North Korea who are dismissed by most as either hapless victims or brainwashed zombies. This book shows that that widely held opinion couldn't be further from the truth, and provides a concise and well written argument that to look for signs of reform in the DPRK, we must look towards the people.

It's time to update our perception of the people of North Korea, and this book is a well informed, readable and thoroughly researched way of doing so.

Inside the New North Korea: The Story the Media Ignores

For those who believe North Korea is all about nuclear missiles, zoot-suited dictators and labour camps - think again. While these deeply unpleasant realities form the dominant global media images of the Hermit Kimdom, they are far from the full story. In fact, since the late 1990s, a market economy has - almost unnoticed by the outside world - sprung into being inside North Korea. With the state distribution system having virtually imploded amid the murderous famines of the 1990s, desperate North Koreans turned to the market mechanism to survive. The astonishing result: While the nation's polity remains frozen in its Cold War deep freeze, the country's economy is now - de facto if not de jure - capitalist. In what may be the world's most top-down state, this transformation marks the biggest bottom-up change in the country's short history. So what are the components of this new "grey" economy; how does it work; and how do its players interact with the still-powerful state? These are the questions this important book tackles. A plethora of tomes focus on North Korean dictators and human rights abuses. This work portrays a different North Korea - and one that is, for the average Kim, Park and Lee, far more representative of their daily reality. The bigger question is why Western policymakers are sticking to their Cold War guns and not recognizing the fact of North Korea's marketization. Why is the wider world not working to support and strengthen this highly positive and promising development - a development that is being driven by ordinary North Koreans themselves, rather than by the monarch and his odious cohorts in Pyongyang - instead focusing policy almost entirely on sanctions aimed at externally denuclearizing the country? (Which, virtually all Pyongyangologists agree, is never going to happen and which has been for the last decade, a total and utter failure.) Regardless; the fact that ordinary North Koreans are successfully changing their lives and improving their systems offers some hope for the future of this sad nation. In asking what life is generally like for regular North Korean citizens

Daniel Tudor and James Pearson’s new book, North Korea Confidential: Private Markets, Fashion Trends, Prison Camps, Dissenters and Defectors, seeks to investigate many of the popular misconceptions and myths that have sprung up around North Korea – still one of the most reclusive countries on the planet. One of their central goals is to cut through the usual hyperbole and rhetoric one often encounters when reading about North Korea to present more of a rounded picture of the actual day-to-day life of ordinary citizens there. In asking what life is generally like for regular North Korean citizens, they come to several surprising and illuminating conclusions. Their core argument is that the devastating famines experienced by the country during the 1990s, coupled with the North Korean government’s “Arduous March” policy and a significant decrease in aid from long-term benefactor Russia, led to a series of highly significant social and economic changes. They reason that subsequent to the calamities of the ‘90s, during which time the North Korean government essentially relinquished responsibility for feeding its people, private informal markets began to emerge – markets which now play an increasingly important role in the country’s social life. They memorably liken this new style of private trade to Victorian Britain’s attitude towards sex: “While everybody does it, few publicly admit to its existence.”
The book comprises seven fascinating chapters, each of which explore a specific aspect of contemporary Korean life. Each chapter is packed full of insightful analysis and compelling nuggets of information, from the popularity of South Korean-style eyelid surgery (often performed by privately trained citizens!), to fashion styled after South Korean stars, the abundance of smuggled films (and pornography) stored on illegal flash drives, illegal cell phones that can call outside the country, the market for comic books, and many, many more. Not since Barbara Demick’s Nothing to Envy has there been such an effective street level view of life in the isolated country. Pearson and Tudor’s book is a highly rewarding read for anyone with even a passing interest in North Korea.

About the Author
Native Californian Nancy Singleton Hachisu has lived with her Japanese farmer husband and three sons in their 80-year old traditional farmhouse for the last 27 years in rural Japan, where she served as the leader of a local Slow Food convivium for more than a decade. She moved from California to Japan in 1988, with the intention to stay for a year, learn Japanese, and return to the United States. Instead, she fell in love with a farmer, the culture, and the food, and has made the country her home. Nancy has taught cooking classes for nearly 20 years, and also runs a children's English immersion program that prepares home-cooked meals with local ingredients. TBS and Fuji TV are currently documenting Hachisu's preserving and farm food life in rural Saitama as wll as her visits to artisanal producers in more remote areas of Japan.

Not quite as good as it could be

Breautiful book, with a fascinating story as background. The author married a Japanese farmer and has lived in Japan most of her adult years. In addition to farming, she runs a school for young children. As an autobiography, the book is excellent. The photographs are lovely and often informative. However, the recipes are not all that they could be. Many are found in other books, with only difference being that Hachisu requires the use of organic ingredients. Some items barely qualify as recipes - take a bowl of hot rice and dribble a fresh egg over it? This takes a page to explain. I would not suggest this book as an introduction to Japanese home cooking. Washoku and Kansha, by Elizabeth Andoh, cover much of the same ground in a more user-friendly format. I don't regret the purchase of Japanese Farm Food, but do not consider it a primary source.

Wonderful book!

I almost wish this was more of a personal journal although I bought it for the recipes. Nancy successfully combines tidbits of her life on a Japanese farm with instructions for making hearty food, leaving me wanting to know more about her farm and her life in Japan. The most helpful part of the cookbook is the concept of recipe ratios - it makes perfect sense and I'm so glad she uses it. I think my grandmother cooked using the same method in Ohio but the knowledge seems to have gotten lost in the last 30 years. Great book!

Love this cookbook!

I bought this because the amount of, or lack of, ingredients in each dish was appealing. It was basic without any huge flare of large amount of spices...but the tastes...oh my, the tastes...are amazing. I have made many, many dishes and they all have been delicious. I even cooked for some of my friends who were in town from Tokyo, and they were blown away that a little white girl from the US could make traditional Japanese food so good and so authentic. They loved it, and they weren't just being nice. This book is the real deal and I highly recommend it.

A wonderful self-help guide for Internet addicts!!

I spent most of my time chatting away for hours and I forgot about my family and friends all the while. Kimberly Young's book helped me to figure out what was missing in my life and why the Internet held such great appeal. The book was able to balance the positive aspects of online use, especially chat room friendships, and help me to uncover other issues in my life that contributed to my addictive behavior. The book really dealt with the issue in a straight forward manner and I felt like I wasn't alone in my struggle. The case studies supported the theory presented and the book offers great practical advice.

A bit outdated

The problem is not, but the book is a outdated about the internet access fee. The terrible story about people spending $800 a month for internet access and get into financial trouble, no longer exist today since we are no longer charged by minutes (which makes it easier to get addicted).
Besides, I don't think controlling the online minutes is a good solution for chatroom / message board addiction. Just like quitting cigarattes or recovering from alcoholism, the only way is to cut off completely.
Now the good things: The existence of this book alone would help. The first step to recover is the simple acknowledge that Internet addiction is a real problem and how destructive it would be. The examples used in the book make you realize you are not alone in this problem.

an invaluable resource for the addicted and their loved ones

Caught in the Net is an invaluable resource for either those who find themselves addicted to internet use or for those who find their lives impacted by a loved ones' excessive internet use. As a recovering chat addict myself, I can vouch for the kind of misery this dependence causes. I, like many other married people I met online, found myself "falling in love" with charming members of the opposite sex and thus jeopardizing my long and happy marriage. As one fellow female chatter expressed it: "I thought I was happily married until I started chatting!" I, like another reviewer of the book, question the likelihood that anyone who has experienced an addiction to chat, is going to recover without abstinence. I found that although I thought I had broken the cycle, once I returned, I was experiencing the same "buzz" and "high" that led me into difficulty there in the first place. The only solution for me was to swear off forever. Dr. Young's book was a refreshing change from the "nudge-nudge, wink-wink" approach to the phenomenon I found in so many other books on the subject which failed to recognize how this problem is devastating real life relationships and how real people in one's life are neglected in favor of attending to the needs of "virtual strangers."

GREAT INTRO REFERENCE TO SIMPLE AND COMPLEX MATH

This is almost a sequel to Innumeracy in which Paulos goes beyond the simple exposition of people's difficulties with math to teach, in a very readable fashion, to main concepts of mathematics, be it simple high school, college, or even the complex research mathematics.

The nice thing about this book is that you can read it bit by bit, since each chapter that deals with a topic is about 3-5 pages long, so you won't get bored and if you don't understand one topic you can move on to the next one. The topics are not really connected, so one can just move on to somehting one finds more interesting.

Overall, I believe I now know what many of the complex topics like chaos theory are about. Enough for a cocktail conversation with a mathematician at least.

one of the few great mathematics books.

I was captured entirely by "innumaracy", so i dwelve deeper into John Allen Paulo works, his website and other books, and i manage to buy several of the books.
I particularly like beyond numeracy. It is not as easily read as innumeracy, but it is deeper and more insightful.
It is written in loose shorter essays focusing on special mathematic things. I love the explanation of "infinity", "chaos theory", "pi", "probability" etc. I think people interested slightly in mathematics will be enchanted and enjoying the book.
Some of the essays are only sweet writing words, some contain heavy formula that needs digestions and basic math understanding.
There are about 70 short essays in all that can be read independently at leasure. I found out i strted to get dizzy after reading 10 essays in a straight reading.
John proved that you can make dry stuff interesting, and if you read some of the materials and use if for conversation, it will makes you look like a whiz with great taste! that is one additional benefit of reading! and you will do it without the usual pain. ;-)

About the Author
Steve McCurry (b.1950) launched his career as a photojournalist when, disguised in native garb, he crossed the Pakistan border into Afghanistan thirty years ago. His remarkable coverage won him the Robert Capa Gold Medal, which is awarded to photographers who exhibit exceptional courage and enterprise. Famous also for his work in Southeast Asia, McCurry's photographs are beautiful, uplifting and affecting. McCurry is a regular contributor to many international journals including National Geographic magazine. He is a member of Magnum Photos.

McCurry"s Magnum Opus

I'll try not to repeat what other reviewers have said or what the product is described as by the manufacturer. Regarding the version I received from Amazon: the cover sheath that the book comes in is black unlike the pink one in the photograph. The book is bound in blue silk (like the product photo). The signed print is well placed inside the front cover of the book. The reproduction is superb and the paper is exceptionally thick. The publisher, Phaidon, could have done a better job in packing the product in a larger shipping box, but mine arrived with no real damage to speak of.

It's a marvelous collection of McCurry's career thus far. The prints are so big at times you feel as if you are right behind the camera taking the photo with McCurry. Most photo books don't give you that sensation as the prints are often less than half the size of the ones found here. It's not as big as Helmet Newton's "SUMO" (full size version) or other offerings from Tachen like "GOAT", but in some ways it's better because it's big but not too big. Unlike some other massive photo books, you can sit down in a chair and leaf through it or lay it on a table or even the floor, which ever suits you best.

The fact that only 3300 of these books have been made and that it is signed by McCurry make it an obvious collectors item. It's worth it.

Breathtaking book

To be perfectly honest, I ordered this book as soon as it was announced, then waited months while it was being made. In that time I developed a thought that it requires some serious nerve for any photographer to publish a book titled "the Iconic Photographs" while still alive.

When the book arrived I was somewhat consumed with the idea of how can anyone possible declare his own images to be iconic. Well, I stand corrected, Steve McCurry have delivered a fantastic collection of images, well worthy of the Iconic Photographs label.

The book is filled with images reflecting on images rather than religious obsession with technical data, and I am impressed to see Steve have included images where focus or exposure may not be "technically entirely accurate" however the images, the moment and the composition simply are so strong and magnificent that discussing technical data is meaningless. On a related note, the book show images captured with everything from film to high-end 24+megapix cameras, and a historical progression clearly showing the fingerprints of some of the earlier digital slr cameras, but through this Steve McCurry carries the same tone and look. To me this is a iconic book for the reason that it is about images, magnificent images.

For a moment forget the price of this book, and simply enjoy the sheer magnificence of a huge book of photography. Each page another outstanding moment captured and printed.

I am completely delighted with this book. and yes, Steve you are forgiven for declaring your work iconic. it IS.!

A rich tapestry of McCurry's best photographs

This is a review of the 'Limited Signed Edition' of 'Steve McCurry: The Iconic Photographs'
...and what an iconic collection it is! From the now-legendary 1984 photo of the green-eyed
Afghan girl to lesser-known McCurry photos, this incredible tome encompasses the absolute best
work of the famed National Geographic photographer.
...So why didn't I give the 'Limited Signed Edition' 5 stars? Well, a couple of things- first,
a good number of the photos are spread over two pages, so you end up with a crease right down
the middle of some great pictures-rather the publisher would have confined these photos to one
page, or made them fold-outs(Which would have made the book more costly, I'm sure). Second
(and this might just bother purists,or collectors of signed first editions like myself),Mr.
McCurry hasn't actually signed the book itself-rather, his signature is on an approx. 8x19 1/2
yellow page at the front of the book that also lists the Limited Edition number and information
about the enclosed signed print. I would assume that the photographer signed these 'yellow pages'
at an earier date, then sent them to the publisher for enclosure in the book when it was bound.
(But then I'm not a publisher and not totally sure how these things are done.) This could affect
the future value of the book. That being said,the beautiful,enclosed signed print might just prove to
be valuable in itself...it certainly is from an artistic point of view!
But,hey, don't let my nitpicking stop you...if you're a fan of Steve McCurry's work, you really
should check out this book. Overall, it's pretty amazing, and the photos are beautifully presented
on high-quality paper...ensuring you'll be able to enjoy this wonderful collection for many years
to come.

Best OBJ-C Review book

This book is great. I've only read a few chapters, but I've understood more in a few chapters than in the last two books I've read in Objective-C. For example, I finally understand what Typedef and @selector() are used for, compared to the other books that explain them in a convoluted way or just touch upon them briefly and then move on.

I've read the Big Nerd Ranch guide and Stephan Kochan one, but this is by far the easiest read. I love it. Keep pumping them out man!
